In a rapidly changing world, industrial design is facing new challenges. For the 2024 Milano Design Week, ECAL presents UPS–Under Pressure Solutions, an experimental research project aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the furniture industry through the use of shape memory materials. Sponge Shelf is a wall-mounted modular shelf. Made out of cellulose sponge, a biosourced and biodegradable material, the object can be shipped in a compressed form. Once it has reached its destination, it is moistened, allowing it to expand and reconfigure itself. You can then decide the shape you want for the shelf until dry, remoisten it when you want to change.
